Question ----- 22-Aug-07

Hi I was wondering - someone told me, but you sound like an expert - is it posisble to keep chickens without a grass/soil area - I have a large fully enclosed 'courtyard' which is completely cobble paved - I have been told that I could use a run with wood chops, straw and such under it - is this practical, and if so, how often would it need changing, and how often would the hens need letting loose to roam the courtyard? Thanks in advance

Answer

Hi, Thank you for your enquiry, yes it is ok to keep chickens on a hard surface, as long as they have got material to scratch about in, ie straw, shavings, peat, compost, bark, etc. You would need to change when the litter gets fowled with droppings, say every two weeks, depending how many chickens you are going to keep. You could let the hens out into the courtyard, after a couple of days, when they have got used to there new housing. Do not hesitate to contact me by phone or email, should you require any further information Regards, Richard, Office 01332541431 Mo 07836687220
